Mural project commissioned by amBUSH Kambri.
‘Food choices’ was created in response to the research of Dr Yandisa Ngqangashe into the regulation and governance of food policies. The work speaks of the way people are expected to make the right choice when they are presented with unhealthy options everywhere.
Dr Ngqangashe’s research involves looking at how implementing structural changes can make it easier for people to eat healthy. Thinking about the effect our environment plays on our behaviour, informed the making of this work. Food literacy, as with many things, is often not enough for people to always make the right choice. It seems to be prevalent that we should look at the systems and structures in place - controlled and maintained by much larger groups - that make it difficult for us to make good choices - for ourselves, for the environment - rather than placing the blame solely on the individual.
